Vasily Afanasevich Bogoyavlensky was born in 1879 in the village of Krasnaya Meta, Novgorod province, in the family of a priest. After graduating from the Theological Seminary, he was ordained as a priest and served in the Novgorod diocese. He was arrested on December 30, 1934, on charges of 'counter-revolutionary activity.' From June 10 to 12, 1935, he was sentenced to 5 years in a labor camp by the traveling session of the special board of the Leningrad regional court and sent to the Suslovsky point of the Siberian labor camp (Novosibirsk region).
In September 1937, Father Vasily was arrested in the camp along with Archbishop Seraphim, the holy martyr, and a group of clergy, accused of being part of a 'counter-revolutionary group led by the prisoner Samoylovich.' Father Vasily did not plead guilty. He was executed on November 4, 1937, by the verdict of the troika of the NKVD of the Novosibirsk region from October 28, 1937, together with the holy martyrs Archbishop Seraphim, Archimandrite Mina, and priests Boris Polyansky, Vladimir Sobolev, Alexander Lebedev, and Alexander Andreev. He was glorified by the Archdiocesan Jubilee Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in the year 2000.
