Martyr
Saint Varvara the New Martyr was born in 1894 into a peasant family. Shortly afterwards, her parents moved to Moscow. She received good education and became a teacher. In 1915, she married Sergei Alexandrovich Losev, who was later ordained a deacon and subsequently a priest.
On 16 February 1938, she was arrested and held in Butyrka Prison. During the interrogations, Barbara Ivanovna denied all the charges of counter-revolutionary activity brought against her. On 25 February 1938, the NKVD troika sentenced her to death. She was executed on 7 March 1938 and buried in a mass grave at the Butovo execution site near Moscow.
