Martyrs Urban, Theodore, Medimnus, and 77 companions, at Nicomedia
Martyrs
During the reign of the wicked Valens, the Arians severely oppressed Orthodox Christians in Constantinople, exiling Bishop Evagrius and oppressing the believers. In response, up to seventy worthy men, led by Urban, Theodore, and Medimnus, went to the king in Nicomedia seeking protection. The king, enraged, secretly sent them to the eparch Modestus with an order for execution. The eparch, fearing the wrath of the people, sent them on a ship, pretending to send them into exile, and ordered the sailors to burn the ship with the martyrs at sea. The ship burned, emitting smoke like incense, and the holy martyrs entered the heavenly abode, praying for us. Their martyrdom occurred in the year 370.
