The holy martyr Terentius and the other forty martyrs suffered cruel tortures for their faith in Christ. The governor of Africa, Fortunatian, fulfilling the decree of the wicked king Decius, forced them to worship idols, threatening them with torture and death. Saint Terentius, responding to the governor, asserted that the idols are merely stone and wood, incapable of helping. The martyrs, despite the severe tortures, preserved their faith and joy, praying to God for help.
After numerous torments, including scourging and burning, the governor ordered their heads to be cut off. They joyfully accepted death, glorifying God. The faithful buried their bodies with honor. On the same day, the holy martyrs James the presbyter, Azadan, and Abidik the deacon are also commemorated, who suffered in Persia under Shapur around the year 380.
