Mother Superior
Saint Tamara was born in 1876 in the village of Uustalo in a Lutheran family. In 1886, after the death of her parents, she entered an orphanage for girls in Ievva, where she learned various crafts. In 1892, the orphanage was transformed into the Holy Assumption Women’s Monastery, where she took monastic vows under the name Tamara in 1917.
From 1918, she became the treasurer of the Cheboksary Women’s Monastic Community. In 1926, the monastery was closed, but the community continued to exist. Mother Tamara performed the duties of the head of the community despite the pressure from the authorities.
In 1941, Mother Tamara was arrested on false charges of anti-Soviet agitation and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. She was sent to a correctional labor camp, where she endured harsh conditions. On May 1, 1942, she passed away from heart disease and was buried in an unmarked grave.
On October 12, 2007, at a meeting of the Holy Synod, she was canonized among the assembly of new martyrs and confessors of Russia.
