The Holy New Martyr Zacharias, Metropolitan of Corinth, suffered great tortures at the hands of the Ottomans in 1684. He was slandered for having a secret correspondence with the Franks. Since this revealed his hatred of the Ottomans, they arrested him, bound him with chains, and led him to trial. Τhe judge offered him a second chance to accept Islam and become a mouslim. After the saint's refusal, he was brutally beaten and imprisoned. He endured all tortures, until the third Sunday after the feast of the Holy Cross, when he was beheaded.
