Great Schema Hieromonk
Saint Sophronius was born in 1870 in the village of Khrushchevka in the Don region. At the age of 21, he was called up for military service, after which he worked at a machine engineering plant. At the age of 38, he left the world and became a novice at the Holy Spirit Monastery in Tsaritsyn, where he took monastic vows and was ordained as a hieromonk.
During the Civil War, he served as a regimental priest in the Volunteer Army of General Denikin. After the closure of the Georgievsky Balaklava Monastery in 1922, he served in parish churches and returned to the Saratov diocese, where he encountered the Renovationist schism.
On February 11, 1928, he was arrested for his activities and for teaching the Law of God. After his release in 1928, he was arrested again in 1930 on charges of anti-Soviet agitation. In 1931, he was sentenced to exile for three years.
After completing his exile, he served in various churches, but on September 22, 1937, he was arrested again. During the investigation, he showed courage and steadfastness, refusing to admit his guilt. On November 1, 1937, the troika of the NKVD sentenced him to death, which was carried out on November 3, 1937. He was buried in a common grave without a name.
