Hieromartyrs Silvanus, bishop of Emesa, the deacon Luke, and the reader Mocius (Mucius)
Hieromartyr
During the reign of the Roman emperor Numerian, in the city of Emesa in Phoenicia, in the year 312, there was a great persecution of Christians. Saint Silvanus, Bishop of Emesa, together with the deacon Luke and the reader Mocius, was arrested for confessing faith in Christ. The judge, unable to persuade them to worship idols, had them scourged and imprisoned.
After long sufferings, they were sentenced to be torn apart by wild beasts. At the place of execution, after praying, the holy martyrs met their martyr’s death, and their souls were received by the Lord. The beasts did not touch their bodies, and the Christians secretly buried the relics of the saints, giving thanks to God.
