Saint Sergey was born on September 5, 1880, in the village of Burino, Tarus district, Kaluga province. In 1901, he entered the Kaluga Theological Seminary, where he participated in socialist circles. After graduating from the seminary in 1904, he was appointed a teacher in the village of Korenevo. In 1905, while engaging in propaganda work, he narrowly escaped imprisonment. In 1907, he was ordained a priest, and in 1908, he left the Socialist Revolutionary Party and dedicated his life to serving God. Soon, he was transferred to the church in the village of Nikitskoye, where he gained authority among the parishioners. During the persecutions by the godless authorities, he refused to renounce his priesthood, not yielding to threats. On August 15, 1937, he was arrested and imprisoned in a jail in the city of Medyn. His children were supported by the parishioners, who did not leave them without assistance. On October 20, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution, and on November 1, 1937, he was shot and buried in an unmarked grave.
