Saint Martyr Sergius was born on July 5, 1886, in the village of Gorbasevo, Klin district of Moscow province, in the family of priest Peter Gusev. In 1906, he graduated from the diocesan school of icon painting and from 1907 he was a teacher in the parish school. He served at the front in 1914, and in 1918 he was mobilized into the Red Army. In 1921, he became a psalmist in the Trinity Church of the village of Birevo. On March 19, 1922, he was ordained as a deacon, and in 1934 — as a priest.
In the autumn of 1937, interrogations began, during which witnesses pointed to his statements about the mercy of God. On October 8, 1937, he was arrested and imprisoned in Taganka prison. During the investigation, he denied all charges. On October 25, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution. Priest Sergius Gusev was shot on October 31, 1937, and buried in an unknown common grave at the Butovo shooting range near Moscow.
