Hieromonk
Saint Sergius was born on January 23, 1884, in the village of Chertanovo, Volokolamsk district. At the age of thirteen, he was sent to the Chudov Monastery, where he became a novice and completed a teacher's seminary. On June 14, 1914, he was tonsured into monasticism with the name Sergius and became a teacher at the monastery school. In 1916, he was ordained as a hierodeacon.
From 1919, he served in the Transfiguration Church of the village of Spas-Ostashkovsky, and in 1930, he was ordained as a hieromonk. In 1935, he was awarded a golden pectoral cross. In January 1938, he expressed dissatisfaction regarding the attitude towards the clergy and the Soviet government.
On February 16, 1938, he was arrested and imprisoned. He was accused of counter-revolutionary agitation. On February 27, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution. On March 7, 1938, he was executed and buried in an unmarked grave at the Butovo firing range near Moscow.
