Saint Sergius was born on September 24, 1880, in the city of Volokolamsk, Moscow Province. In 1895, he graduated from the Volokolamsk Spiritual School, and in 1902, he graduated from the Vifanskaya Spiritual Seminary. He served as a teacher in a parish school, and in 1904, he was ordained as a deacon. In 1919, he became a priest and was drafted into the Red Army, but with the help of parishioners, he was released from military service. Upon returning, he served in the Trinity Church.
On February 17, 1938, he was arrested based on a denunciation, and on February 27, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution. He was shot on March 7, 1938, and buried in an unmarked common grave at the Butovo firing range near Moscow.
