Saint Sergey was born on September 20, 1893, in the village of Vanilovo, Moscow Province. He graduated from the Kolomna Theological School and the Moscow Theological Seminary, after which he served as a psalmist in the church. In 1926, he became a priest in the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Kapotnya. During the persecutions by the godless authorities, he tried to save the church from closure, appealing for help to the parishioners.
On November 27, 1937, he was arrested and imprisoned in Taganka prison. During the interrogation, he denied all accusations, asserting that he conducted services on church holidays. On December 7, the NKVD troika sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment in a labor camp.
Varvara Ivanovna, the wife of Father Sergey, was arrested on February 16, 1938. During the interrogation, she denied all accusations of counter-revolutionary activity. On February 25, the NKVD troika sentenced her to execution, and she was shot on March 7, 1938, buried in an unmarked grave at the Butovo shooting range.
Priest Sergey passed away in custody on September 29, 1942, and was buried in an unmarked grave.
