Saint Savva I, first Archbishop of Serbia
Holy Hierarch
Archbishop
Archbishop
Saint Savva was born into a pious family of rulers of the Nemanjić dynasty, descended from many saints. At the age of 17, he took monastic vows on Mount Athos and became a follower of Christ. His father, the Venerable Simeon the Myrrh-gusher, renounced the throne and founded the Hilandar Monastery. Savva united Serbia, receiving autocephaly for the Serbian Church from the Ecumenical Patriarch, and saved the country from wars. He was a true hesychast, deeply immersed in the teachings of the ancient desert fathers, and provided guidance for the spiritual life of Serbia. He became renowned for many miracles after his death.
