Holy Martyr Roman Marchenko
Hieromartyr
Priest Roman Marchenko was the rector of the Pokrovsky Church in the stanitsa of Nadezhdenskaya, Vernensky district of the Semirechye region (now the city of Issyk). The closure of the Pokrovsky Church in the autumn of 1929 resulted in a great tragedy. The Cossacks of the stanitsa actively resisted the sacrilegious actions of the godless authorities, and to suppress them, mounted police were introduced into the stanitsa. Several dozen parishioners were arrested, and the priest was killed. Saint Martyr Roman was glorified in the ranks of saints at the Jubilee Archdiocesan Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000.
