Baruch ben Neriah
Prophet
The holy prophet Baruch was a disciple of the holy Jeremiah and did not leave him during the Babylonian captivity. He wept bitterly over the destruction of Jerusalem and was present at the stoning of his teacher. Baruch prophesied about the incarnation of the Son of God, beginning with the words: “This is our God, and no one else can be compared to Him” (Bar. 3:36-38), and foretold the fate of Jerusalem. After the death of Jeremiah, whom he buried, he himself soon passed away in Egypt, likely in 595 B.C. His book, written for the Jews, called for repentance for sins and the promise of freedom from captivity, is considered a supplement to the book of Jeremiah and is often combined with it in church tradition.
