The holy prophet Obadiah was from the village of Vitharim, near Shechem, and served as a steward to King Ahab. He secretly served the One God while Israel worshiped Baal, and he saved the prophets by hiding them from Jezebel. Obadiah fed a hundred prophets during the famine when Elijah was on the earth.
When Ahab sent Obadiah to seek water for the livestock, he met Elijah, who instructed him to inform the king of his arrival. Obadiah was afraid that Elijah would disappear and he would be killed, but Elijah assured him that he would appear before Ahab. After meeting Elijah, Obadiah rejoiced at the miracle performed by the prophet and continued to serve God.
After Ahab's death, Obadiah served under Ahab's son, Ahaziah, and was one of the fifty men sent to Elijah. Two of them were consumed by fire from heaven, but Obadiah was spared and, humbly asking, received the opportunity to follow Elijah. He left the royal service and, having received the spirit of prophecy, was buried with his ancestors.
