Venerable
Saint Porphyrios was one of the most important figures of the Orthodox Church in the 20th century. His teaching and ascetic example continue to inspire Orthodox Christians today, and his memory lives in the hearts of those who knew him.
He was born in 1906 on the island of Evia in a devout family and longed for monastic life from an early age. At the age of twelve, he dreamed of going to Mount Athos, where he eventually became a monk in the Kavsokalyvia skete under the guidance of wise elders.
Despite illness, he devoted his life to serving others — first in Evia, then in Athens, where he was a parish priest and spiritual father to thousands. Later, he founded the Holy Transfiguration Monastery, which became the crown of his efforts.
Saint Porphyrios passed away in 1991 on Mount Athos. In 2013, he was canonized, and the Church now honors his memory each year on December 2. His life, full of love, humility, and spiritual insight, remains a shining example of holiness for the Orthodox world.
