Venerable
Saint Porphyrios was one of the most significant figures of the Orthodox Church of the twentieth century. His teachings and ascetic example continue to inspire the faithful to this day. His memory lives on in the hearts of those who used to know him.
He was born in 1906 on the island of Euboea into a devout Christian family. From an early age, he longed for the monastic life. At the age of twelve, he dreamed of traveling to Mount Athos. Thus, he became a monk at the Skete of Kausokalyvia, where he was guided by experienced elders.
Despite the illnesses that afflicted him, he devoted his entire life to serving others, first living in Euboea and later in Athens, where he served as a parish priest and spiritual father to thousands of people. Later, he founded the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, which became the work of his life.
Saint Porphyrios reposed in 1991 in Mount Athos and was canonized in 2013. The Church commemorates his memory each year on December 2. His life, filled with love, humility, and spiritual discernment, remains a radiant example of holiness for the entire Orthodox world.
