Saint Peter the Tsarevich, the nephew of Khan Berghai, was healed by the Rostov bishop Cyril, who came to the Horde at the request of the Khan. After his healing, Peter secretly left with the bishop to Rostov, where he was baptized with the name Peter. He diligently studied, prayed, and attended church services.
After the death of Bishop Cyril, St. Ignatius became the new bishop. One day, while delayed on a hunt, Peter saw in a dream the holy apostles Peter and Paul, who commanded him to build a church in their honor. Peter fulfilled their instruction, exchanging three icons with an iconographer and bringing them to the bishop.
The church built became a place of veneration for the holy apostles, and a monastery was founded on that site. The veneration of the Blessed Tsarevich Peter began in the 14th century, and the local celebration was established at the Council of 1547 under Metropolitan Macarius.
