Saint Martyr Peter suffered together with the martyr Stephen at the hands of the Kazan Tatars for converting to Christianity from Islam. His relatives, after the departure of the Russian troops, took him by force home, calling him by his former Muslim name, hoping that he would renounce Christ. But Saint Peter, remaining unwavering in faith, replied: "God, glorified in the Trinity, is my Father and Mother: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit... If you believe in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, then you are my relatives; in Holy Baptism, I was given the name Peter, not the one you call me."
His family handed him over for torture, during which he, until his very death amidst cruel torments, did not cease to confess the Name of Christ, crying out: "I am a Christian". The holy martyr was buried in Kazan at the place where the ancient church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ was located, which was at the Grain Market.
