Saints Peter, Alexis, Jonah and Philip, Metropolitans of Moscow
Holy Hierarchs
The celebration of the Moscow saints Peter, Alexis, Jonah, and Philip is observed on October 5. These great saints preserved Orthodoxy in Russia during difficult times, similar to the Ecumenical saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Saint Philip, Metropolitan of Moscow, was added to the celebration at the request of Metropolitan Innocent in 1875. On this day in Moscow, a small evening service with a moleben is performed, as well as an all-night vigil with a procession, during which the local icon of Saint Alexis is transferred to the Assumption Cathedral.
