Saint Anthony, living in the Egyptian desert, learned about the existence of a more perfect monk, Saint Paul, and set out to find him. After long wandering, he found Paul's cave, but at first, Paul did not open the door. Anthony, praying, asked him to let him in, and finally, Paul opened the door, and they embraced, rejoicing at their meeting.
Saint Paul told about his life: he was born in Thebaid, went into the desert to escape persecution of Christians, and lived there, feeding on dates and wearing garments made of leaves. During their conversation, a raven brought bread, which was a miracle from God.
Paul, sensing his end, asked Anthony to bring a mantle from Bishop Athanasius for his burial. Anthony, not wanting to leave Paul, nevertheless went to the monastery. On the way, he saw Paul's soul ascending to heaven, and upon reaching the cave, he found him already dead.
Anthony mourned for Paul, buried him with honors, and lions that came helped him dig the grave. After the burial, Anthony returned to his monastery, telling his disciples about the life and deeds of Saint Paul, keeping his garment as a relic.
