Saint Parthenius, in the world Peter Krasnopevtsov, was born in 1792 in the village of Simonovo, Tula province, into a family of a poor man. From childhood, he realized that earthly goods could not bring true happiness. In 1805, he graduated from the Tula Spiritual School and entered the seminary. In 1819, he entered the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where he began his monastic life, fulfilling obediences with diligence and humility. Saint Parthenius was known for his modesty and piety, and he suffered from severe headaches for over 30 years, but did not complain about his fate.
In 1824, he took monastic vows with the name Pafnuty, and in 1829, he was ordained as a hieromonk. He became the spiritual father of the brotherhood and served in various churches, including the Assumption Cathedral and the Lavra printing house. Saint Parthenius was known for his deep spiritual experience and wisdom, helping many repentant souls.
In 1838, he accepted the schema and deepened his prayer practice, receiving comfort and support from God. He often spent time in solitude, praying in the forest and strengthening his soul. Saint Parthenius suffered from demonic attacks but always remained faithful to God.
In the last years of his life, he lived in the Near Caves, preparing to meet the Lord. On March 25, 1855, while preparing the church for the service, he passed away. His burial took place in the church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Source.” In the 1930s, the church was destroyed, and the holy relics of the saint are now buried.
