Saint Paphnutius of Jerusalem was a bishop who endured many sufferings at the hands of pagans. He was tortured by fire, wild beasts, and then beheaded.
It is believed that he was an Egyptian bishop and suffered alongside many Egyptians who were exiled to the Palestinian mines during the persecutions of Diocletian (284–305).
The myrrh-streaming relics of the holy martyr became renowned for miracles. A canon was written for him during the time of iconoclasm (before 842 AD). The last hymn of the canon contains a plea for the intercession of the holy martyr to end the heresies that troubled the Church.
