Hieromartyrs Nerses, Bishop of Shahrqart (Kirkuk) and his disciple Martyr Joseph
Hieromartyrs
Saint Nirsas was a bishop in Persia and had a disciple named Joseph. Both aspired to a virtuous life and fulfilled the law of Christ. Nirsas elevated Joseph to the rank of bishop, and together they converted many pagans to the faith in the True God.
The Persian King Shapur raised a persecution against Christians, forcing them to worship the sun and fire. Saint Nirsas and Joseph, rebuking the delusion of the Persians, were captured and brought before the king. When demanded to worship fire, they boldly replied that even death would not separate them from the love of Christ.
Enraged, the king ordered their heads to be cut off, and the holy martyrs received incorruptible crowns in heaven on November 20th in the city of Sciagarkadate.
