Blessed Nikon was born in Kiev, of noble parents, and became a monk in the Pechersk Monastery. During the invasion of the Polovtsians, he was captured and tortured for three years, refusing ransom from his relatives, believing it to be God's will. He endured severe torments but continued to pray and give thanks to the Lord.
Nikon predicted his freedom, saying that Christ would deliver him. On the third day, while he was being guarded, he became invisible and was transported to the Pechersk church, where he was met by the brethren. He did not allow the shackles to be removed until he was convinced that it was God's will.
After peace was made with the Polovtsians, the one who held him captive came to the monastery, accepted baptism, and became a monk, serving Nikon. The Blessed also performed miracles, healing captives from hunger and aiding his tormentor, who, being near death, repented and was healed.
Nikon is called 'the dry' due to his sufferings and wounds. He preserved his faith and good deeds, receiving from God an incorruptible body and a crown of glory. His life is an example of steadfastness and devotion to God.
