Ηegumen / Abbot
He was born in the city of Yuriev-Polsky from pious parents. From a young age, he was raised in godliness and aspired to see the Venerable Sergius, imitating his life. Leaving his home, he came to the monastery of Sergius, where he was directed to the elder Athanasius for testing. After being tonsured into monasticism, Nikon diligently worked under the guidance of Athanasius, excelling in virtues and prayers.
At the request of the brotherhood, he was ordained to the priesthood and showed zeal in his service. He was filled with the desire to see Sergius again, who accepted him and entrusted him to serve the brotherhood. Nikon became a model for imitation, and Sergius entrusted him with the care of the monastery. After the death of Sergius, Nikon sorrowfully accepted the abbacy, following his commandments and caring for the brotherhood.
The fame of Nikon spread, and people came to him for counsel. However, desiring solitude, he withdrew to a cell, but the brotherhood, not wanting to be without a shepherd, called him back to leadership. Nikon agreed, but on the condition that he would be given time for prayer.
During the invasion of the Tatars, Nikon prayed for the protection of the monastery and received a vision foretelling imminent deliverance. After the monastery was destroyed, he, along with the brotherhood, restored it, building new structures and a church in the name of the Life-Giving Trinity, consecrated in 1411.
Nikon, having reached a deep old age, continued to work diligently and care for the brotherhood. Before his death, he bequeathed to them to observe the established rules and to keep patience in temptations. He died on November 17, 1428, having served as abbot for 36 years, leaving behind many miracles and healings.
