Father Nikolai Kelsievich Zavarins was born on May 4, 1878, in the village of Kichmengsky Gorodok, Vologda Province. In 1897, he became a teacher of church-parish schools, and in 1926, he was ordained as a priest and appointed to the Vladimir Church in the village of Piksur.
In 1931, he was sentenced to one year of imprisonment but was acquitted in 1932. After his release, he served in the Trifon Church; however, in 1932, he was arrested again and sentenced to five years of imprisonment. He was released early in 1933.
In 1935, his parishioners tried to defend the Vladimir Church from closure, and the church was saved. On February 16, 1937, Father Nikolai and his daughter Nadezhda were arrested. He was accused of anti-Soviet agitation, but he did not confess to the charges and asserted that his 'weapon is the Gospel and religion.'
Father Nikolai was executed on August 19, 1937.
