Saint Nicholas was born on December 10, 1893, in the village of Glebovo, in the Staritsa district of Tver. He belonged to the family of the cleric Mikhail Vereshchagin. He studied theology and was ordained a priest during the period of the persecutions that followed the Revolution. He served in the church of his village, where his father had also been a priest.
In the summer of 1937, he was slandered by witnesses who falsely accused him of conducting counter-revolutionary propaganda. On September 20, he was arrested and imprisoned. During the interrogation, he denied the charges, claiming that he had never acted against the regime.
On October 15, the NKVD troika sentenced him to death. He was executed on October 17, 1937.
He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000.
