Saint Nicholas Ushakov was born in 1876 in the city of Yaroslavl in the family of a deacon. He graduated from the Yaroslavl Theological Seminary and served as a priest in the village of Semenovskoye in the Braitovsky district. In 1930, he spent three months in prison on charges of counter-revolutionary activity. In 1937, he was arrested and accused of counter-revolutionary agitation among the faithful, of attracting youth to the church choir, and of 'indoctrinating them in an anti-Soviet direction.' He did not acknowledge the slanders against him. On November 4 of the same year, he accepted a martyr's death—he was shot by the verdict of the troika of the NKVD.
