The Holy New Martyr Nicholas Konstantinovich Protasov was born on November 21, 1867, in the village of Ivanovskoye, in the Moscow region, into the family of a priest. He studied at the Tula Theological School, from which he graduated in 1890, while in the same year he was ordained to the priesthood.
He was arrested for the first time in 1930 on charges of failing to fulfill his duties in the state grain procurement campaign. He was sentenced to one year of imprisonment and three years of exile. After completing his sentence, he was arrested again on charges of failing to pay the required state taxes. He was then sentenced to two years of imprisonment and five years of exile. He was arrested once more on January 5, 1937, accused of holding terrorist political ideology and engaging in anti-Soviet propaganda, for which he was sentenced to five years of exile in Kazakhstan.
He was arrested for the last time on September 9, 1937, in connection with the investigation involving the hieromonk Gabriel. He was sentenced to the supreme penalty and was executed on November 19.
