Saint Nicholas (Fyodorovich Filippov) was born in 1885 in the village of Makarievo, in the Lyskovsky District of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

During the years of religious persecution, he faithfully served as a presbyter of his village church. On September 13, 1937, he was arrested and steadfastly denied all the charges brought against him. Nevertheless, on November 11, 1937, he was sentenced to death and got executed, confessing his faith to Christ through martyrdom.
