Archbishop
Saint Nikodim, Archbishop of the Serbs, was a monk of Mount Athos and abbot of the Holy Monastery of Hilandar. In 1317, following the death of Archbishop Sava III, he was elected to the episcopal throne, despite his personal desire to live in solitude. As archbishop, he passionatly cared for all the affairs of the Church, crowned the eldest son of King Milutin in 1321, and defended in all ways the Christian faith.
Saint Nikodim translated the Church canons from Greek into Serbian, working for the spiritual and national unity of the Serbian people. He governed the Serbian Church for eight years, until his repose in May 1325. His holy relics rest in a shrine within the church at Peć.
The memory of the saint is commemorated on August 30.
