Saint Nicodemus was born in Northern Epirus, in the region of Elbasan. His parents were devout and faithful Christians. Ηe married and started his own family. However, influenced by the Turks, he renounced the Christian faith and became a muslim.
With his change of religion, he also drew his children in Islam, except for one, whom Christians managed to save and send to Mount Athos. Upon learning where his son was hiding, Saint Nicodemus traveled to the athonite land with the intention of taking revenge. However, when he arrived there he repented and became a monk. He spent three years in prayer and fasting, seeking forgiveness for his impious deeds.
Having received the blessing of Saint Acacius, he returned to his homeland, where he courageously confessed his faith in Christ. As soon as the Turkish Pasha learned of his confession, he ordered that the saint be tortured, yet Saint Nicodemus remained unharmed. Three days later, as he continued to denounce Islam, his was beheaded.
The saint fell asleep in the Lord on July 11, 1722. His holy relics are preserved to this day, offering grace and consolation to all the faithful.
