Saint martyr Nicander lived in Egypt during the reign of Diocletian. He was a physician and constantly visited the holy martyrs in prisons, healing them and burying their bodies.
Once, seeing the bodies of the martyrs thrown to be eaten by beasts, he did not dare to approach them by day, but at night, taking them on his shoulders, he buried them in a secret place, wrapping them in clean shrouds.
A pagan, seeing him, reported to the governor. Saint Nicander was captured and subjected to torture, but he did not renounce Christ and bravely endured suffering.
The torturer, seeing his steadfastness, ordered that his living skin be stripped off and then beheaded. The holy martyr, having put off the old man, was clothed with the new and, after his head was cut off, united with Christ, glorifying the Most Holy Trinity with the other holy martyrs.
