Saint Modestos, Archbishop of Jerusalem
Holy Hierarch
Patriarch
Patriarch
Saint Modest was born in the city of Sebastia to pious parents and from a young age sought the Lord, leading a strict monastic life. He became the abbot of the Theodosian monastery in Palestine. During the invasion of the Persian king Khosrow, when many Christians were killed, Saint Modest escaped death and, after the invasion ended, was appointed to govern the Palestinian Church. He gathered the remains of the slain monks and restored the churches, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Saint Modest governed the Church as a patriarch, performing miracles and healings. Reaching the age of ninety-seven, he peacefully surrendered his spirit to the Lord and moved to the eternal abodes.
