The Martyr Mavra Vasilyevna Moiseyeva was born in 1875 in the village of Shaly, Temnikovsky District, Tambov Province—now part of the Republic of Mordovia—into a peasant family. Before the revolution, she lived in her own house and managed her household. Her life remained relatively peaceful until 1937.
Mavra Vasilyevna attended the church in the village of Shadyme to pray. Wishing the church to be strong and beautiful, she began collecting donations from the parishioners for repairs to the building. The church was renovated with the funds that had been raised.
In 1937, after the church had been repaired, Mavra Vasilyevna was arrested on charges of participating in a religious counter-revolutionary organization. During her interrogations, she declared that faith in God was not a crime.
On August 5, 1937, an NKVD troika sentenced her to death by shooting. The sentence was carried out on August 10. At the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Martyr Mavra Moiseyeva was canonized.
