Saint Matrona was born in 1862 in the village of Zamyatino, Zubtsovsky district of Tver province. After entering the Novodevichy Monastery in Moscow, she lived there until its closure by the Soviet authorities. After the monastery was closed, she continued to live in one of the cells, which had been converted into communal apartments. On March 21, 1938, nun Matrona was arrested and imprisoned. She fell seriously ill and was placed in the hospital of Butyrka prison, where she passed away on April 1, 1938. She was buried in an unmarked grave.
