Matthias the Apostle
Apostle
The Holy Apostle Matthias, born in Bethlehem and educated in Jerusalem, was chosen by the Lord to be among the twelve Apostles after the defection of Judas. He preached the Gospel in Judea and among the Gentiles, performing many miracles and healings. Saint Matthias turned people to Christ, confirming his words with signs. His sufferings began when he was captured and brought before the high priest Ananias, who condemned him to death for preaching about Christ. The Apostle, not renouncing his faith, was stoned and, giving up his spirit to the Lord, completed his ministry. His body was honorably buried by the believers.
