Saint Matthew the New Martyr was born on August 9, 1868, in the Moscow province. He was a member of the church council and actively participated in the sacraments of the Church. In 1933, he was arrested for failing to fulfill his agricultural duties. However, the sentence was never carried out.
In 1937, while discussing the closure of the church, he expressed his opposition to the Soviet government and the persecution it was carrying out against Christians. On September 7, 1937, he was arrested and got imprisoned. According to medical records, he had suffered an almost complete loss of vision.
On October 10, 1937, the NKVD troika sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment and forced labor. Matthew Ivanovich died on January 18, 1938, in Siblag. He was buried in an unmarked grave.
