Venerable Mark was born in Athens and, after the death of his parents, withdrew to Egypt, where he lived for ninety-five years in the cave of the Thracian mountain, not seeing anyone. He suffered from cold and heat, his food was rare, and unclean spirits pursued him. After thirty years of trial, the Divine grace descended upon him, and angels brought him food.
During a conversation with Abba Serapion, he performed a miracle by moving a mountain five thousand cubits, which demonstrated his great faith. Venerable Mark, seeing the mountain move, commanded it to return to its place, and it obediently returned. He bitterly wept upon realizing that Christians lived only in name.
Before his end, he offered prayers for the salvation of Christians and commanded Abba Serapion to bury him in the cave, sealing the entrance. His soul was received into Heaven, and Abba Serapion witnessed this miracle.
After the burial of the saint, two angels guided Abba Serapion to the great elder John, where he told of the life and end of Venerable Mark.
