Venerable Martyr Maria, in the world Maria Georgievna Vinogradova, was born in 1886 in the village of Likhachevo, Volokolamsk district of the Moscow province. She completed 2 classes of the church-parish school. In 1904, she entered the Moscow Skorbiashchensky Monastery. After the monastery was closed in 1922, she worked in an artel sewing blankets. In 1929, she was arrested by the OGPU but was soon released. In 1933, the authorities demanded that she leave Moscow, and she moved to Volokolamsk, where she worked in the farmers' gardens. In 1935, a priest from the village of Vozmishche accepted her to work in the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, where she, along with the nuns, performed monastic services.
On January 25, 1938, she was arrested. During the interrogation, she confirmed that she had gathered with the nuns for prayer, but did not admit to any anti-Soviet activity. On February 11, she was sentenced to death by shooting by the troika of the U.N.K.V.D. She was executed on February 17, 1938, at the Butovo firing range and buried in an unknown common grave. On June 30, 1989, she was rehabilitated by the Prosecutor's Office of the Moscow region. She was canonized among the new martyrs and confessors of Russia on October 6, 2008.
