The holy martyrs came from different regions of the Roman Empire and lived in Adrianople during the reign of Emperor Leo the Armenian. At that time, the Bulgarian king Krum devastated Thrace and Macedonia, capturing the inhabitants of Adrianople, among whom was Bishop Manuel, who was cruelly executed. After him, Ditzeng ascended the Bulgarian throne, who also persecuted Christians. He ordered the bishop Manuel to be sawed in half and cruelly tortured other saints, such as George of Develtos and Peter, who were executed by the sword. The martyr's end was also suffered by John, Leontius, Gabriel, and Sion, while Parod was stoned. Many other Christians were imprisoned and subjected to torture. These saints earned themselves an eternal kingdom through their sufferings.
On the same day, we commemorate the holy hieromartyr Anastasius, deacon of the Caves, who passed away at the end of the 12th century and rests in the cave of St. Anthony.
