Saint Prophet Malachi came from the tribe of Zebulun. He lived and prophesied during the time of Nehemiah, after the return of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity. He was known for his devout life and the purity of his soul. For this reason, people used to call him Malachi, meaning “Angel of the Lord.”
The prophet rebuked both the people and the priests for their lack of reverence and genuine faith in God, for offering unworthy sacrifices, and for their hypocrisy. He warned of the coming judgment of the Lord, which would not be delayed because of betrayal, adultery, false oaths, and the oppression of widows and orphans. Among his prophecies were the coming of the Messiah and the appearance of John the Forerunner shortly before.
He reposed at a young age and was buried in the village of Suphah. He was the last prophet of the Old Testament.
