Monastic Martyr Macarius of Dionysiou, Mount Athos
Venerable Martyr
Saint Macarius was a disciple of the Most Holy Patriarch of Constantinople, Niphon, and sought to end his life as a martyr for the Lord. He revealed his desire to Saint Niphon, who blessed him on the path of suffering. Macarius went to Thessalonica, where, confessing the Christian faith, he endured cruel tortures from Muslims. He was beaten and pierced with daggers, and then his head was cut off. Saint Niphon, being in solitude, predicted the martyr's end of Macarius and his ascension to heaven. Blessed Macarius suffered in 1527, on September 14.
