Ηegumen / Abbot
Saint Macarius, the abbot of the Pelikite monastery, was born in Constantinople. Having lost his parents in childhood, he diligently read the Word of God and decided to dedicate his life to God. Entering the Pelikite monastery, he became the abbot after the death of the prior, Saint Hilarion. During the reign of the emperors Leo V the Armenian and Michael II the Stammerer, Saint Macarius suffered as a confessor for the veneration of holy icons, and was exiled to the island of Afusia, where he passed away around the year 830.
