Saint Blessed Prince Lazar lived in the 14th century, during a time when the Turks were attacking Serbia. He was appointed the ruler of one of the Serbian regions and in 1371 was proclaimed king of all Serbia. During his reign, he subdued neighboring princes, cared for Christian enlightenment, built churches, and supported monasteries. In 1380, he built the Ravanica Monastery and achieved recognition of the Archbishop of the Serbian Patriarchate.
With the onset of war with the Turks, during the Battle of Kosovo, the wounded king was taken captive and on June 15, 1389, was beheaded by the order of Sultan Bayezid. His body was buried in the nearest church, and in 1391, the incorruptible relics were transferred to the Ravanica Monastery. After the monastery was destroyed by the Turks in 1683, the relics of King Lazar were moved to the New Ravanica Monastery on Fruška Gora.
