Blessed Lavrenty, a fool for Christ, came from the noble family of Khitrovs and lived in the house of the Kaluga prince Simeon. He became famous for his miracles, including protecting Kaluga from enemies. In 1512, during the attack of the Crimean Tatars, he appeared to Prince Simeon and helped him in battle, shouting, 'Give me a sharp axe.' After the battle, the prince recounted his assistance, while Lavrenty, in his foolishness, claimed that he had defended the prince from dogs.
He lived in a hut near the Church of the Nativity of Christ, where he offered prayers. He passed away on August 10, 1515. After his death, many healings occurred, including the healing of the paralytic nobleman Lev Andreevich Kologrivov and the possessed Stefan. Miracles continued to happen even in later times, including during the Patriotic War of 1812, when his intercession saved Kaluga from enemies.
The memory of the saint is celebrated on August 10 and July 8, in remembrance of the first healing he performed.
