This was a difficult time for Rus' after the invasion of the hordes of Khan Batu in 1240, when Kiev, the mother of Russian cities, fell into desolation. The Holy Kiev-Pechersk Monastery suffered severe destruction, and many monks perished or were taken captive. However, despite the devastation, secret services continued in the monastery. Blessed Hypatius the Celebrant, working in obedience, cared for the sick and spent nights in prayer, tasting only bread and water. Through his diligent service, he received the gift of healing diseases, and many suffering people turned to him for help. The incorrupt relics of Blessed Hypatius rest in the Theodosian caves of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. His memory is honored on April 13 and on the 2nd Sunday of Great Lent.
