Saint Joseph (Baranov) was born in 1861. He served at the courtyard of the Yaroslavl Tolga Monastery in the city of Rybinsk, Yaroslavl Province, fulfilling the duties of the head of this courtyard. On August 20, 1918, Father Joseph was taken away from the courtyard and the next day was found murdered on the Cheremkha River. Information about his execution by the godless authorities was received by the Commission for the Persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church at the Holy Council from members of the Yaroslavl Diocesan Council. Saint Joseph was canonized by the Archdiocesan Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000, by the decree of the Holy Synod on July 17, 2001.
